What Causes Dog Liver Problems Causing Seizures?

The cause of this condition is due to the inability of the liver to function properly. One of the functions of the liver is to remove toxins that are created by other organs and detoxify or remove them from the system. When the liver fails to work properly this cannot happen and the toxins build up until they give the dog a drunken feeling and the brain gets affected by these chemicals.

As the brain gets affected with these chemicals it 'malfunctions' and does not work as well as it should, to rectify this event the body has a seizure which can be thought of as a method for the body to take time out and fix the problem. When the seizure is over the problem has been temporarily fixed and thus the dog may seem completely normal and unaffected by the recent event.

Until the liver problem has been fixed the chemicals will continue to effect the brain causing more seizures and further risk to the body.

What Your Vet May Say or Do

If the vet suspects this condition there will be many test including blood tests, x-rays and ultrasound scans, often the cause of this in younger dogs will be an abnormally developed liver which then causes an abnormality called hepato-portal shunt which is treated by using surgery to correct the problem or medication and a change in diet to ease the work of the liver.

If the dog is older then it could be tumors in the liver or scirrosis of the liver, in this case the treatment may be limited and have little to no effect on the dog. But there are many different causes and cases so as with many seizure related conditions the underlying problem should be proved and solved first by the vet or professionaly advised by the vet.
