What Causes Dog Parvovirus Infection?
Parvovirus infection is caused by a virus that targets the lining of the intestines. It is more common in puppies that are under the age of twelve weeks old and is quite uncommon for older dogs without it being caught from a younger puppy.
This simple but otherwise devastating infection is contagious and should be treated immediately to stop it spreading to other dogs or puppies, if you suspect this illness then you should report to the vet straight away to give your dog or puppy the best possible chance of surviving.
What Your Vet May Say or Do
There are no known cures for this infection and the only way for your puppy or dog to survive is by letting its body fight the virus in its own time.
To help this process, when you vet suspects this virus is present and has sent a blood sample off for further testing, he/she will then use a drip line to keep the puppy well hydrated and antibiotics to keep them from developing any secondary bacterial infections wile their immune system fights the current problem.
In most cases if you get your dog or puppy to the vet as soon as possible your pet will survive, but in some cases your dog may die despite the best efforts on your vets behalf.
