What Causes Dog Yeast Infections?

Affecting some breeds more than others, the dog yeast infection is a bacterial infection and is commonly brought on by greasier skin which is sometimes an effect of skin allergies or other skin problems.

Although not always associated in the dogs ears, yeast infections do occur more commonly in this place along with the anal glands and other parts of the dog's outer skin. In small numbers yeasts are fine but as more become present it will become itchy and irritating for the dog.

What Your Vet May Say or Do

To combat this situation the underlying cause should first be found and dealt with by taking swabs of the skin and eliminating other conditions that may be causing similar effects. The vet may then recommend special anti-yeast shampoos to reduce the greasiness of the skin if this seems to be the problem. If not then a course of antibiotics may be issued and creams or gels to stop the itching so further skin damage is not cause by over scratching or licking.
