History
It is not entirely known where the Dutch Smoushond is from, but it is believed that they are partially connected to the German Schnauzers. The Dutch Smoushond was very popular during the later part of the 1800s where they served as gentleman's companions. After World War Two however, these dogs were almost extinct - it was attempted to save them but with little success. After some success was achieved by Mrs. H.M. Barkman in the 1970s, the Dutch Smoushound has been re-created through selective breeding. This breed is very rare, and barely known outside the Netherlands.
Characteristics
The Dutch Smoushound is a very friendly and charming dog - they are also very crafty and intelligent dogs. These dogs are considerably flexible, and sober. They are very good companion dogs, very watchful and they also possess a good sense of humour.
Temperament
The Dutch Smoushound is a very low maintenance dogs that is friendly and has lots of charm. The Dutch Smoushond tends to be wary of strangers, but very playful with those he does know. These dogs are very watchful and they have a good sense of humour. This breed loves to bark, and they are also eager to please their owners. The Dutch Smoushound gets along well with children and also with other animals in the family.
Care
Dutch Smoushounds are very low maintenance dogs - and their coats have a hairy unkempt look about it. It is advised that their coats is plucked twice during the year, but leaving the hair on the head alone. The excess hair between the pads of the feet and ears should also be removed. Training
The Dutch Smoushond is a very clever dog, and they are also very keen to please their owners and families. The training of these dogs is fairly easy, but training should be conducted in a consistent manner - otherwise they will try and take control if they see that the trainer is not firm enough.
