History

It is believed that the English Cocker Spaniel actually originated from Wales. Their skills in hunting the bird known as the woodcock earned them their name. Similar to other cocker spaniels, the English Cocker Spaniel was bred to flush out birds from even thick bushes.

Characteristics

English Cocker Spaniels are very bright, lively, tender dogs. They are also very affectionate and easygoing dogs – making them wonderful companions for the family.

Temperament

The English Cocker Spaniel is an enthusiastic, good-humoured and cheerful dog. They have a lot of affection to give, and they also have a very receptive and tender nature. This is a friendly breed, and they love to be around their loved ones. Being a sweet and passionate dog – the English Cocker Spaniel makes a great family pet. It is worth noting though that some of them can be overly dependant on their owners, therefore becoming clingy. It is important to teach Cocker Spaniels to be independent from an early age onwards. These sensitive dogs can sometimes be overly shy and obedient. Early socialization and training is very important for Cocker spaniels.

Care

It is important to comb and brush their coats on a regular basis. Some of their coats are very teeming and prone to matting. Others are more glossy and flat. Coat type varies considerably within the breed. They can be bathed or dry shampooed when it is necessary. The ears of these dogs should also be checked for grass seeds and signs of infection. Excess wax in their ears should be removed on a regular basis. The hairs on their feet should also be brushed down, and be trimmed to the level of the feet. The hair around the pads should be trimmed, but not the hair between the toes. English Cocker spaniels are very averaging shedding dogs. Training

This breed is naturally willing to learn, and they quickly understand what is expected of them in most situations. They show a great deal of understanding and steadiness during training is necessary – otherwise they might try to take over your role.
