History

Pointer was first developed in England, although its ancestry can be traced back to a variety of European sporting breeds. These European breeds were too slow for what the breeders were looking for, and it is believed that breeds such as the Greyhound and Setters may have been introduced to perk up the speed and stamina of these dogs. By the 19th century the English Pointer had become the top of the pointing breeds. Today they do extremely well as a sporting dog and are a common winner of the national pointing trials.

Characteristics

Although these dogs are friendly and lively, they can also become very shy if not properly socialized at a very young age. Pointers can also prove very difficult to train properly. Seeing that these dogs have hunting instincts, they are not suggested for homes with little and passive animals.

Temperament

English Pointers are very bright and clever dogs, full of energy. They are also very well balanced and charming dogs. They are wonderful sporting dogs with excellent noses, and also good bird hunting instincts. Pointers are good family pets and good with children if they have grown up with them. Seeing that these dogs have a lot of energy, they require a lot of running exercise. Pointers can be educated to escort you on your daily runs or biking activities. Pointer will do best with an experienced dog owner who can contain this active breed.

Care

The grooming needs for the English Pointer are minimal. Their coats simply need to be brushed on a regular basis to keep it looking smooth and clear the dead hair. Training

The English Pointer does not have a very long attention span, and should also have a variety of activities as part of their training. These dogs can be very wilful and stubborn, and easily distracted. Obedience classes at an early age are recommended for Pointers.
