History

The first basic setter was developed in France in the1500s. They were obtained from the Spanish pointer and the French pointer. About three centuries later it was brought to Great Britain, and here its true developer was an extremely intelligent breeder by the name of Sir Edward Laverack. He developed the English setter from early French hunting dogs in the early 1800's. Laverack was so involved in establishing the breed that the English setter is often called the Laverack Setter. These dogs were known for their vast beauty. This is the reason they are therefore foundation stock for many of today's top show dogs. English setters are energetic, fast and very quiet workers with excellent noses. Their coats keep the dogs comfortable in both hot and cold weather conditions. The sweet character of the English setter and their gentleness with children make them wonderful family companion dogs.

Characteristics

The English setter is very gentle and has a very appealing personality. This breed can also be very wilful; therefore experienced handling is an absolute must. This breed can be very sensitive to the sound of ones voice. If they are given the right surroundings, training, and socialization they will make a magnificent companion. This breed possesses very strong pointing instincts. They will do best in a home where they can have jobs to do on a regular basis. English setters make excellent hunting companions.

Temperament

An energetic and feisty dog with elegance, vigour, eagerness, and a sweet nature, the English setter has a lot to offer to their families. This is a loyal and reactive dog that likes to shower his family with love and devotion. The English setter loves the company of his owners and family, and is a very friendly creature. These dogs have a lot of energy, and will flourish on spending time with their loved ones enjoying some movement and exercise.

Care

English setter requires to be brushed regularly in order for their coats to stay in good shape. The feathering coats should be checked for seeds as they have the tendency to get stuck in the coat. The English setter that is used for show should be groomed more often, about three times a week. Dry shampooing is often used for these dogs so that the natural oils are not removed from their beautiful and long coat. For more detailed info, take a look at the English Setter grooming page.

Training

English setters can be very difficult to housebreak, but they want to please their owners. If they are given the correct handling and techniques, English setters can learn very quickly. Obedience classes for these dogs are recommended from an early age on. The English setter will perform at his best with positive reinforcement, but it is important that they should be corrected in calm and soft ways. This breed is very sensitive, and rough punishment may destroy their lovely nature.
