History

The English toy spaniel's origin probably traces back to Asian spaniels and perhaps even to the Pug. This breed was however primarily developed in the British Isles. This affectionate companion dog became a sweetheart of the British royalty. One type of English toy spaniel, the King Charles spaniel, is named after King Charles II of England. He owned quite a few of these charming little dogs. During the 19th century, the English toy spaniel was subjected to several changes. They were bred smaller - and they also had a compressed, upturned face with protruding eyes. This is the English toy spaniel you will see today.

Characteristics

English toy spaniels are gentle, happy and playful dogs. They are very loving and sweet, but can sometimes be very shy. They will be warm towards those who approach them lovingly. The breed is naturally well-behaved and clever, but they are quite wilful. These dogs are quiet and not very demanding. They need to be treated in a very gentle manner.

Temperament

The English toy spaniel is a sweet natured, straightforward, and gracious dog. They have a very friendly personality, a calm nature, and a lot of love to give to his owners. The fairly low demands and good nature of this breed has made them a hit amongst the aged or those that are unable to offer much in the way of exercise for their pet. The English toy spaniel is well matched to the inexperienced owner as well as the more experienced one. These small dogs can make a great companion pet.

Care

Grooming requirements are pretty straightforward, and brushing them twice a week should help to keep their coats tangle free and in a good condition. They may have to be brushed a bit more when they are shedding more. The hair around their bottoms should also be trimmed for hygienic reasons. Also make sure that their ear canals are clean and dry - this will reduce the chances for infections. These dogs don't shed a great deal if they are groomed properly. They are well suited for allergy sufferers. For more detailed info, take a look at the English Toy Spaniel grooming page.

Training

The English toy spaniel is definitely the ideal dog for you if you are looking for a very undemanding, sweet, gentle and friendly companion dog. They also love to cuddle up with you. These dogs will get along fine with older children that are also more considerate - they do not like being teased or treated roughly. Therefore they are not well matched to younger, rowdy children. These dogs get on well with other pets, but can be reserved when strangers are in the vicinity. The English toy spaniel is a very fast learner, and also very obedient.
