History
Fila Brasileiros are believed to be offspring of the Bloodhound, the Bulldog, the Rafeiros and the 15th-century English Mastiff. These dogs probably inherited their skin and good sense of smell from the Bloodhound. The superb tracking ability is probably from the Bloodhound and the body and braveness probably from the Mastiff. The Fila Brasileiros has the ability to track and manage farm animals and large game. During the time when slavery was still permitted in Brazil, the Fila Brasileiros was put to use to return fugitives unscathed to their slave masters.
Characteristics
If the Fila Brasileiros is socialised from a young age onwards, they will get along well with children. These dogs are very positive, confident and they also have a very calm nature. Fila Brasileiros are perfect for people looking for caring, but also quiet dogs. These dogs are generally used as a guard dogs.
Temperament
Fila Brasileiros are very brave dogs, they also get along well with their families. This breed is also very committed to his owners, and will protect them without any hesitation at all. These dogs will also bond with other animals at home, but will be very cautious of strangers. This breed makes a very amazing guard dog. Proper socialisation of these dogs is very important in order to be successful owners, and it is also important to understand the instincts of these dogs.
Care
The coats of these dogs are fairly easy to groom, and can be brushed with a firm hair brush from time to time. Their coats can also be rubbed down with a damp cloth. The Fila Brasileiros should also be bathed only when it is really necessary. These are also average shedding dogs. For more detailed info, take a look at the Fila Brasileiro Grooming page.
Training
It is not advised that first time trainers try and train these dogs, and obedience classes are definitely advised for these dogs. Fila Brasileiros are fairly difficult to control, even more so than other dog breeds. A dominant owner is required if the dog is to be successful in its training.
