History

Flat-Coated Retrievers had their origin during the 18th century. This breed of dogs was quite popular until the World War commenced - but at that stage they were overshadowed by the Golden Retriever and Labrador breeds. Many dog lovers feel that the Flat-Coated Retriever does not get all the attention that they deserve. They are very good swimmers, and they make wonderful dogs within the family. Flat-Coated Retrievers possess a wonderful sense of smell, and they also have a very good instinct.

Characteristics

These dogs are very lively, but they make very loyal family dogs. They just love human attention, and adapt well in larger families because here they can get lots of attention. Flat-Coated Retrievers are very easy dogs, and they show a lot of affection. This breed is very obedient, and they have a very good disposition.

Temperament

Flat-coated Retrievers are very playful dogs, and they love a lot of exercise and activity. These dogs thrive on the attention and company of the families they belong to. They are very passionate and eager dogs. They fact that they have such a wonderful nature makes them excellent family dogs. These dogs should not be taken in if there is not enough time to give to them - these dogs need enough stimulation when it comes to physical and mental activities. If they become more, they might end up being destructive.

Care

Flat-coated Retrievers do not shed that much, but they can shed a bit more during certain times of the year. If one suffers from allergies, these dogs might not be the best choice. Brushing these dogs twice a week should be sufficient in order to keep their coats in a good condition. It is also recommended to check the inside of the ears to make sure that they are dry and clean, and thus avoiding infections. Training

It is well known that these dogs are very bright, and also very trainable. These dogs are very happy go lucky, and their training should have enough consistency. But too much repetition in training will eventually bore them. Flat-coated Retrievers acts more positive towards correction and positive reinforcement - and not discipline. It is advised that their training regimes should have a lot of fun as part of it, and this will help to keep their attention.
