History
These dogs have their origin in Scotland during the 1600s. Because of their excellent hunting capabilities, Gordon Setters became very popular dogs. These dogs are the only Scottish gundogs that were bred exclusively to hunt game birds. The fact they have lots of stamina and energy makes them able to hunt in unpleasant weather – and also hunt in water and on land.
Characteristics
Gordon Setters are stronger, and more muscular than the other Setter breeds. These dogs have a very graceful and distinguished look about them. And at the same time they also possess the power to hunt for extended periods of time. Of the standing breeds, these Setters are considered to be one of the most reliable, trustworthy and stunning dogs. Gordon Setters have been successful as hunters – and they also do very well as show dogs.
Temperament
The Gordon setter is a dog that has a very affectionate and gracious character. These dogs love affection, and to socialise. They are also very watchful and level-headed dogs. Gordon Setters are very fond of playing, and spending time with their families – especially when there are fun and activities involved. The Gordon setter is appropriate for inexperienced and experienced owners – but it must known that they can be stubborn and wilful at times. The owner must therefore be certain and self-assured.
Care
It is important to comb and brush these dogs often to keep their coats in a good condition. It is important to check for tangles in their coats, and especially give them extra attention when they are in the process of shedding. They should be bathed only when it is really deemed necessary. Special care should also be taken by trimming their nails, and also trim the hair at the bottom of their feet. These dogs are not heavy shedders, and shed fairly average. Training
Seeing that these dogs are very bright and clever, they are quite easy to train. These dogs do have a mind of their own, and it is therefore recommended to socialize them with other animals when still young. At times they might also be very stubborn. Because they might also show difficulty when it comes to housebreaking, the create method works well with these dogs. Rough training methods are not recommended for these dogs. It is best train them in a firm and fair way.
