History

The first images of a dog very similar to the Great Dane can be seen on Greek money which dates back to 36 B.C. Powerful mastiff-like dogs were brought to Italy and Spain by Asiatic people. These dogs were superb animals, and some of them were able to overcome bears. These dogs were then cross with Irish Greyhounds, and the dogs which came about was the gorgeous Great Dane.

Characteristics

The Great Dane is an extremely liable and trustworthy dog. They are amazing pets for the family. During puppy hood it is important to provide them with enough training so that they do not lean against people, and especially on children.

Temperament

The Great Dane is a massive dog, but they do have very enduring and mild personalities. These dogs have a wonderful nature, and therefore make excellent family pets. They are very helpful and committed to their owners and families. Some experience with dog ownership is recommended if you intend to get a Great Dane as they can be very obstinate and bossy. The Great Dane is a very brave dog. The fact that they are so big already makes them wonderful watchdogs. These dogs love lots of attention from their owners, and this should be kept in mind.

Care

Great Danes do not shed very much – only average. Their short coats are very easy to groom. It should be brushed with a firm hair brush. They should be dry shampooed only when it is necessary. It is a very big task to bath these dogs, so it is definitely beneficial to groom them on a daily basis. Special care should also be taken by trimming their nails. Training

Great Danes has to be trained by a dominant handler. The training has to be very firm, but also at the same time gentle. It is important that these dogs are trained sufficiently when it comes to obedience training when they are still small, as it can be very difficult to train them when they are mature.
