History
The Pyrenees is considered the noble family member of both the St. Bernard and of the Newfoundland breed of dogs. It has its origin in France, where it also has a very long history as being a guard dog. It is believed that these dogs have been around even before 1800 BC. These dogs were born to live in the mountains, and have served humans in many different ways. They have been used as avalanche rescue dogs, cart pullers and sled dogs.
Characteristics
Great Pyrenees dogs can be very hard headed, and they are also fairly independent. These dogs are extremely loyal to their owners, but they tend to be cautious of strangers. In general these dogs have good manners. If you are looking for a good companion, this dog would be ideal – and they will excel when brought up in a country environment.
Temperament
This breed of dogs is very friendly and loving. They thrive on the company of humans and therefore make wonderful pets for families. It is important that they have enough space, and also that they are exercised enough. Great Pyrenees dogs are very bright, and they are fast learners. These dogs are very brave, and also protective of their owners. These dogs tend to be obstinate, and it is therefore advised that prospective owners do have some experience of dog ownership. The Great Pyrenees is very fond of playing, and they just love outdoor activities.
Care
The coat will be kept in a good condition if it is brushed on a regular basis. When these dogs are shedding their undercoats, it is important to perform some extra grooming. Once a year these dogs shed very heavily. These dogs can be bathed and dry shampooed – but only when it is really necessary. For more detailed info, take a look at the Great Pyrenees Grooming page.
Training
The Great Pyrenees dog can be a handful when it comes to handling and training them. They are generally very keen to work and satisfy their owners though. If the correct training methods are used by a dominant handler, these dogs can be very trustworthy and obedient.
