History

This very old breed of dogs is the fastest dogs in the world. They can reach speeds of over 40 miles per hour, and on of its greatest characteristics is the speed they possess. It is said that they are originally from the Arabian Sloughi, and were then brought to England by traders before 900 AD. Long ago these dogs were used to hunt deer and boars. It was possibly to easily catch these by pulling them down, without even stopping.

Characteristics

Greyhounds are very calm, but also responsive dogs. These dogs make excellent companions for children. Greyhounds are extremely talented in a wide variety of areas, which includes among them hunting, sighting, watch dogging and racing. The Greyhound is very elegant dog that is fairly petite. This makes him an exceptional running companion. Greyhounds adapt very well in a home environment, and they are very fond of human interaction.

Temperament

The Greyhound is an alert dog. At the same time they possess a lot of style, and are also very determined. They are very well known for their racing capabilities, and they are a racetrack dog. They have very warm personalities, and they are fun to be around with. These dogs have a very good nature, and thoroughly love the company of their families – at the same time they are also relatively independent. Although they are very fast dogs, the exercise requirements are not very extreme. Greyhounds are fine to relax with their families, but will definitely need a chance to run in a safe area once in a while.

Care

Greyhounds have very low grooming requirements, and are therefore ideal dogs for people who don’t have a lot of time to give to grooming. If they are brushed once in a while, their coats should stay fairly smooth and dirt free. For more detailed info, take a look at the Greyhound Grooming page.

Training

These dogs are a very bright breed. They are however quite sensitive, and will need a handler with experience to train them. For puppies, obedience classes are definitely recommended. Their handlers should be mild, but the training should also be consistent. Greyhounds love a variety of training methods with challenges included in order to keep them fit and also happy.
