History

The Hovawart is a very good example of the diligence that was portrayed by German dog breeders over 100 years ago. The Hovawart is a very popular dog in Germany, but they are almost unknown in the USA. These dogs are very flexible and clever. Written evidence of these dogs can be found in Eike von Repgow's Sachsenspiegel. During the 1200s, these dogs were almost extinct - but then in the 1920s they were recreated by the efforts of Kurt Konig.

Characteristics

Hovawarts are very good-natured and calm dogs. They are quite tough on themselves, but very devoted to their owners and families - they do have the tendency to become very attached to one specific person in the family. These dogs are very watchful, and affectionate - and they have a very good sense of smell. These dogs are very fond of playing - even at an old age.

Temperament

The Hovawart can be very peaceful when at home, but they are very energetic when outdoors. This breed is very strong-minded but also very obedient. They show lots of affection, especially towards its master. These dogs are very loyal towards their families - and are excellent around children. The Hovawart can be a bit wary toward strangers - but in general they are good natured dogs with an even balanced temperament.

Care

The coat of the Hovawart is very easy to groom - and occasional brushing should be sufficient. Extra care should however be taken where tangles have been formed. These are average shedding dogs. For more detailed info, take a look at the Hovawart Grooming page.

Training

The Hovawart learns fairly quickly, and they will perform best when training is conducted in a consistent and loving way. Hovawart perform extremely well as a tracking, avalanche, watch and defence dog.
