History

The Ibizan hound is originally from Spain. Their history can be traced back many centuries. These dogs were used as rabbit hunters in Ibiza – therefore their name. Today these dogs are primarily used as retrieving or hunting dogs. They also make good companions for their owners, seeing that they have a very good nature.

Characteristics

These dogs have a nickname of “Beezers”. The Ibizan hound is a very clever dog. They are very trustworthy and warm dogs. They are very willful, and it is important to train them constantly, as they tend to get bored fairly quickly. These dogs should not be kept separate, but rather as members of the family. The Ibizan hound is a polite dog, and they love to socialise.

Temperament

The Ibizan Hounds are quiet dogs. They are clean, they love playing and they are very courteous. This breed does very well when around children. They are also very mild and level-headed dogs. These dogs will at first be reserved toward strangers, but will relax their stance if they see that the stranger means no harm. The Ibizan hound should be watched around pets such as rabbits, cats and rodents as the Ibizan hound is bred to hunt these animals.

Care

The Ibizan hound comes in three varieties: the smooth-haired, long-haired, and wire-haired Ibizan hound. Neither of these dogs requires a lot of grooming. The shine on the coats can be maintained if it is run over by a rubber glove often. All these varieties can be groomed by an occasional brushing. Their ear passages must also be checked from time to time to make sure that they are clean and dry. For more detailed info, take a look at the Ibizan Hound Grooming page.

Training

These dogs should be trained gently. Consistent training is required though in order to prevent them from becoming bored. If the Ibizan hound is not trained properly, they might become bullies. This breed excels in hunting tasks and retrieving sports. Ibizan hounds are good learners.
