History
The Icelandic Sheepdog is the only dog local to the country. These dogs were brought to the country by the first Viking settlers in 874-930 AD. The Icelandic Sheepdog adapted its style to the local terrain and the farming methods used by the local people - these dogs have become essential in the gathering of livestock on the farms. The popularity of these dogs increased over the last few decades, and the Icelandic Sheepdog is no longer seen as being in danger of extinction.
Characteristics
The Icelandic Sheepdog is very lively and friendly - these dogs are also very calm, clever and keen on learning new things. This breed is very affectionate, watchful and caring. They can be quite hard on themselves, but also very courageous and a bit obstinate at times. The Icelandic Sheepdog also loves to bark.
Temperament

Icelandic Sheepdogs have double coats that are thick and also weatherproof. These dogs do not shed, but will blow its coat twice during the year. It is also advised that the nails of these dogs are trimmed often, as they will have not contact with the ground if they become too long.
