History
Irish Terriers were developed in Ireland during the 1700s. This makes them one of the oldest terrier breeds that there is. In the past, these dogs have been employed as farm dogs, used for pest control and as hunters of small game. During the Great War their cleverness and guts made them the perfect choice for messenger.
Characteristics
The Irish terrier is a medium size dog, and they are very even balanced. These dogs are very elegant and also very active. They present themselves in a very proud and majestic way. Irish terriers possess a lot of strength and guts. They will fight any enemy without taking heed.
Temperament
Irish Terriers are very quick-tempered, but remarkably brave. These energetic dogs are lovingly referred to as ‘daredevils†by the people that like them. The Irish terrier is a very playful dog, and they make excellent friends for children. It is important that these dogs are trained correctly from the beginning; otherwise they can be quite a handful. Irish Terriers are very loving and gentle toward humans, but they can be aggressive toward other dogs. This breed is very daring and curious, and they are always ready for some action and adventures that may come their way.
Care
Grooming needs for these dogs are not very high. It is recommended that their coats are brushed once a week in order to keep it in a good condition. Show dogs will have to have their coats clipped several times throughout the year. The ears and teeth of these dogs should also be checked to make sure that they are clean, and ensure good hygiene. Training
Irish Terriers are very clever dogs. They are quite wilful, and they also tend to be difficult to housebreak – therefore the crate training method is suggested. It is very important to socialize these dogs from a very early age, and also train them up in obedience. These dogs will not respond in a positive way if they are treated rough or in a heavy-handed way. Training for these dogs must be conducted in a firm and fair way. Irish Terriers excel in hunting and retrieving tasks. They are also very good in guarding and tracking, and also in police and military work.
