History
Although there is not complete agreement on this, it is believed that the Irish Water Spaniel has its origin from the Poodle and the Irish setter. They do show a lot of resemblance to the brown Standard Poodle. Irish Water Spaniels have gained quite a status in England and in Ireland for their brave retrieves in cold water. During the 1800s, these dogs became popular for their duck hunting skills. Today, these dogs are considered to be rare bread.
Characteristics
Irish Water Spaniels are a breed of ancient descent. These dogs are very alive and possess a lot of energy. This breed is very strongly built. These are true sporting dogs – they are brave, very watchful and quite curious. Some fans refer to the Irish Water Spaniels as the “clowns” of the Spaniel family.
Temperament
Irish Water Spaniels are the tallest of the spaniels. These dogs love fun. This is a very brave breed, and they are quite clever. They are also very quick in their learning, and this in return makes their training fairly easy. Irish Water Spaniels can be somewhat stubborn. It is therefore recommended that prospective owner do have some experience in dog ownership. The character of the Irish Water Spaniel can differ from one dog to another. These dogs possess a very high energy level, but it does ease off as they grow older. Seeing that these dogs are quite protective, they make very good watchdogs.
Care
These dogs require quite a lot of grooming in order to keep their coats in a good condition. It is important that their coats are trimmed by someone with the necessary skills. These coats are usually good for allergy sufferers, seeing that they have very little dandruff. These dogs shed almost no hair. Training
These dogs have a great longing to please their owners, and they are therefore able to learn a great deal. They can be very independent and obstinate at times. It is therefore recommended to socialize them with other dogs from an early age onwards, and train them up in obedience. Irish Water Spaniels respond best to firm and consistent training techniques. These dogs are bored quickly with repetitive tasks, ad it is therefore good to have short sessions, with different varieties. Leadership should also be established within the family; otherwise these dogs will try and dominate.
