History

Irish Wolfhounds have their origin from the Cu. These are very large dogs that are used for the hunting of wolves and boars. Irish Wolfhounds used to be given as royal gifts and they eventually became so well-liked that their export from England had to be stopped. The Wolfhound disappeared from Ireland during the year of 1766, but was later brought back to Ireland by the Romans. This breed of dogs was eventually revived by the incursion of Great Dane and Deerhound blood.

Characteristics

Irish Wolfhounds can be somewhat threatening because of their size. But they are very loving and gentle and dogs, and sees everyone as a friend. These dogs are not very good guard or watchdogs. The Irish wolfhound has an average intelligence. However, they are still very keen on learning and they are fairly easy to train.

Temperament

The Irish wolfhound is one of the biggest and tallest dog breeds in the world today. Many know the Irish wolfhound as the “gentle giant”. These dogs present themselves with dignity, and they also have a very gentle nature. Although Irish wolfhounds require ample space and attention, they can still make wonderful family pets. The Irish wolfhound is very bright, and they are also quick learners – this makes their training much easier. During the early years of these dogs’ lives, they can be quite destructive. It is therefore advised that potential owners have some previous experience in dog ownership. These dogs will require lots of exercise.

Care

Irish Wolfhounds have rough coats of a medium length. They require thorough grooming with a brush and a comb on a regular basis. This will ensure that their coats are kept in a good condition. It is advised to pluck their coats once a year in order to remove any dead or excess hair. These dogs are only average when it comes to shedding. Training

Irish Wolfhounds are very fast learners in general. They quickly catch onto what you want to teach them, so they are there very obedient dogs. This breed of dogs requires firm training techniques. When still a puppy, they should be trained to not pull on the leash. Seeing that they are so strong, it can be a problem in the future when they are more mature.
