History
Italian Greyhounds are a very old Greyhound. A dog very similar to the Italian Greyhound was found in a 6000 year old Egyptian tomb. This breed of dogs was brought to Europe by the Phoenicians. At a later stage the Romans further developed this breed. These dogs are portrayed in many paintings of the 16th century, and it was during this time that these dogs became popular with European upper class. Italian Greyhounds make tremendous companion dogs.
Characteristics
Italian Greyhounds are very dependent on their owners, and does not do well when confined to a kennel environment. It is advised that these dogs are always companions. They do have a tendency to be a bit tense, and they need constant assurance from their owners that they have behaved well. The Italian Greyhound is a very lively dog. They are very fast, and this makes them ideal for speed trials in which they often take part in.
Temperament
Italian Greyhounds can be very feisty and playful if they get the chance. At times they are also very quiet and calm. The Italian Greyhound has a very friendly and warm character. Some can be very shy, and it is therefore necessary that these dogs are socialized with other dogs when they are still young. Even if these dogs love attention from their owners, it is advised that sudden touching should be avoided – these dogs get scared very quickly. Apart from being very fast, they are also very good in jumping. Regular exercise is important for these dogs.
Care
Italian Greyhounds are some of the easiest dogs to groom. They should only be rubbed down by a piece of towel in order to keep their coats shiny and bright. After bathing these dogs, you should make sure that they are completely dry and warm. The teeth of these dogs should also be brushed regularly. Also make ensure that their toenails are trimmed. Training
Italian Greyhounds can be quite a challenge when it comes to training them. They tend to be very tense, but also very sensitive. Professional training is mostly required for these dogs as they will not train with anyone. They are also not very good at housebreaking. These dogs are however very eager to please their owners. It is recommended that they are exposed to obedience training when still young.
