History

Jack Russell Terriers have been developed by a guy called Jack Russell during the 19th century in England. These terriers are very lively, and were used to hunt small game. The working ability of these dogs has been emphasized by breeders, so there is a wide standard including different body types. Jack Russels are very fond of playing, and they make excellent family companions. Jack Russels have many talents, and some of them are hunting, tracking and the performing of tricks.

Characteristics

Jack Russells are very powerful, resilient and strong little dogs. These little terriers have outgoing personalities, and always a keen expression on their faces. These dogs are very curious, and they are also very vocal little dogs. These dogs are without fear, and they think they are bigger than they actually are.

Temperament

The Jack Russell Terrier is a very lively, happy and committed little terrier. They are feisty and also very obedient, and they are also without fear. These dogs take good care, and they can also be very entertaining. They love to play with their toys, and in general they are very kind towards children. Jack Russels are very intelligent and strong-minded. They can however be difficult to train, but will do well with an experienced trainer. Seeing that these dogs have very strong hunting instincts, they should not be left alone with other dogs. They just love to explore and chase. These dogs should not be let of the leash unless properly trained.

Care

These dogs are very easy to groom, and can only be brushed occasionally with a firm hair brush. These dogs should be bathed only when it is found to be necessary. If these dogs are used for show purposes, their coats should be stripped from time to time. For more detailed info, take a look at the Jack Russell Terrier Grooming page.

Training

Jack Russell Terriers can be quite complicated, strong-minded and wilful. They will require firm and consistent training, and they can also become bored fairly easily. They should know who their master is; otherwise they will try and dominate. Obedience training is highly recommended for this breed seeing that they can be quite wilful.
