History
It is believed that the Japanese Chin has its origin in Korea. This breed was then later developed in Japan, after which they were introduced into Europe during the 1700s. These dogs became very popular after a pair was given to Queen Victoria in 1853. The name of these dogs then changed from the Japanese Spaniel to the Japanese Chin.
Characteristics
Japanese Chins are a very fine and delicate breed of dog. Japanese Chin dogs have a very curious nature. These dogs are really noble. Japanese Chins also are very energetic dogs. Originally they were bred to be a companion dog that is pampered. Today they still have that role.
Temperament
These dogs have a very calm and loving nature. They love to play, and they are also very feisty. Japanese Chins are small dogs, but they come with large personalities. This breed of dogs makes excellent companions, and they enjoy it thoroughly to give and to receive attention. The Japanese Chin loves to cuddle. If you do not have enough time to commit to a pet, this breed will not work for you. These dogs are very reactive, and very clever. This breed is right for inexperienced and experienced owners, as well as for senior citizens. Some Japanese Chins are quite hard to housebreak, but obedience training should not be too difficult if positive training methods are being used.
Care
Japanese Chins requires daily grooming. These dogs need to be combed and brushed to keep their coats free tangles. Professional dog groomers should advise you on how these dogs should be brushed and combed, as it should be done in a specific manner. These dogs should also only be bathed when it is really deemed necessary. It is also advised that the eyes and ears of these dogs are checked on a daily basis for hygienic reasons.
Training
Japanese Chins are more obedient than some of the other toy breeds. These dogs are very eager to please their owners and families, so they do fairly well during training. This breed also does extremely well at performing tricks and learning. Harsh training methods do not have a positive effect on Japanese Chins, as they are very sensitive dogs. They respond better when gentle and loving training methods are used.
