History

The Kangal Dog has its origin in Turkey, and they are also the national dog breed of Turkey. At first, these dogs were used to guard livestock - but since the demand has increased to use them as guard dogs. These dogs have some relation to the mastiff type dogs.

Characteristics

The Kangal was developed to be a guardian of livestock - they are therefore very attentive and protective. It will always protect the family and animals with which it has bonded. These dogs are cautious of strangers - being it dogs or humans. But they are however very loyal toward their owners and families.

Temperament

Kangal dogs are generally calm and controlled - they are also very autonomous and protective of their property and families. They tend to be wary of strangers, but they are never shy or cruel. Kangal dogs that have been properly trained are sensitive dogs that are alert to situations that are changing. They are also very good guardian dogs of children and of livestock. This breed may not be well suited for all homes, as they can be quite obstinate at times.

Care

The Kangal Dog does not have a lot of grooming requirements and their coats should be brushed thoroughly twice a year when it is shedding. Throughout the year they will not need lots of attention. These dogs are heavy shedding dogs on a seasonal basis. For more detailed info, take a look at the Kangal Dog Grooming page.

Training

These dogs can be wonderful livestock guardians if they are trained properly. This breed is not one of the most intelligent dogs, but they are safer to be around children and other visitors. These dogs should be trained in a firm way, and the owner should establish their dominance early on - otherwise these dogs will try to take control. The trainer should be informed, and training should also be conducted in a consistent manner - the training should also be fair in order for it to be successful.
