History

These dogs are believed to have its origin from Hungary, and these dogs have a very long history. They have originally been breed to guard flocks of sheep. The Komondor is a beautiful dog, and love people. They can be a bit cautious toward strangers, but in general they are a very loving breed. The Komondor is very confident, and come across fairly serious.

Characteristics

Komondor are very protective dogs, although they are pretty calm inside their houses if no danger can be sensed by them. This breed responds very well to obedience training, and it is important for them to obey their owners and families. It is advised that these dogs are socialized well from puppy hood onwards in order to avoid them being over protective.

Temperament

This breed is very dependable, and also very distinguished. Komondors are sensible dogs and they are also very watchful. They are very committed to their families. These dogs are very autonomous and self-sufficient and these characteristics are just a part of their nature. As puppies they can be very active and light-hearted – they do however calm down as they get older. The Komondor has a very deep bark that can be very disturbing at the wrong times.

Care

A Komondor requires a great deal of grooming, as a lot of time has to be paid to detail. The maintenance of their coats takes a lot of commitment. The cords on their coats have to be separated ever so often, and if it is not clipped regularly, it will reach the ground when they are about 6 years old. To bathe these dogs takes a lot of time – an hour or two needs to be set aside for this task at least. Then it still takes about 24-48 hours to dry properly. The coats should be cleaned often, as they are prone to pick up all sorts of debris outside. For more detailed info, take a look at the Komondor Grooming page.

Training

Komondors are very clever dogs. This said they can still be very stubborn and independent. Therefore obedience training is necessary in order to tame this behaviour. As puppies these dogs should be introduced to new surroundings ever so often in order to avoid aggressive behaviour at a later stage.
