History

The Kooikerhondje has its origin in Holland - these dogs are of a Dutch breed that was developed to attract ducks into traps. Kooikerhondjes can be seen in portraits that date back from the 16th and 17th century. These dogs however did not become official until they were recognized in 1966 as a breed. This breed almost became extinct after the end of World War II when declining duck stocks left the Kooikerhondje without a job.

Characteristics

These dogs are very jolly, gracious and courageous dogs. The Kooikerhondje is also a very clever and confident dog. These dogs will seldom bark, and they will also bond very closely with their own families and owners. The Kooikerhondje can also be a good watch dog if it is called for. This breed can be rather sensitive, and therefore not ideal to be around children.

Temperament

Kooikerhondjes are very clever and energetic dogs. They are very supple and good natured dogs. These dogs can however be very protective, and will always bark at strangers. These dogs are good swimmers in general, and they are able to adapt to different levels of exercise.

Care

Kooikerhondjes are average shedding dogs and the first shedding begins when the puppy hair starts to be replaced by adult hair at the age of 3 months. The coats of these dogs are not very high maintenance, and should only be brushed on a regular basis in order to reduce the shedding. Training

Training of Kooikerhondjes should be done in a consistent manner. These dogs are very clever, and usually keen to learn - this make training of them very easy. This breed is very sensitive to voices, so tough training is not necessary. The trainers of these dogs should be firm; otherwise they will try to dominate.
