History

The Kuvasz is originally from Tibet. These dogs were used there to protect rulers and also act as bodyguards. Eventually they became very popular for looking after livestock for the people living in the villages.

Characteristics

The Kuvasz tends to be a bit distrustful of strangers. They require a lot of socialization at a younger age in order to avoid being shy or aggressive when they become older. In general, these dogs are very obedient. This breed is always ready to protect his owners, no matter what it takes of them.

Temperament

The breed of the Kuvasz is very trustworthy dogs. They posses a lot of braveness, and they are also very determined dogs. They can be quite protective, but at the same time also very cautious of strangers. It must be known that these dogs can get very aggressive with other animals in order to protect their own families. Regarding training, these dogs are very clever – and they learn quickly. They tend to dominate, and will be bored easily if these is not a lot of variety in the activities they take part in. It is therefore recommended that their prospective owners have some previous experience of dog ownership.

Care

Grooming demands for this breed is not very demanding, although these dogs have long coats. If their coats are brushed once a week, it should be in a good condition. During certain times of the year their shedding might be more, and then it will be necessary to put more time and effort into the grooming requirements. The Kuvasz will not be a good match for someone with allergies as they shed quite a bit. For more detailed info, take a look at the Kuvasz Grooming page.

Training

These dogs are very bright and clever, as well as being obedient. They will however require a firm coach when it comes to training. At the same time their training should also be gentle, as these dogs are very aware of the tone of voice being used. The Kuvasz excel in herding and obedience training.
