History
Lakeland terriers are originally from England. These dogs are related to various other terriers, including the Bedlington and the Dandie Dinmont terriers. These terriers were originally used to hunt pests.
Characteristics
The Lakeland terrier tends to be very cautious around strangers, but if they are socialised properly they get along very well with other animals. These dogs are very fond of chasing after moving objects, so it is important to keep them on a leash when they are outside a yard.
Temperament
Lakeland terriers are very playful dogs. They have plenty of energy, and are quite entertaining when given the chance. They are very fervent dogs, and they love life. Lakeland terriers are very assured of themselves, and also very brave. They have a very probing nature, and this will sometimes get them into trouble. Lakeland terriers love to dig – so garden lovers should be aware of this beforehand. Lakeland Terriers want to be busy all the time, and will not be suited for an owner who doesn’t have enough time.
Care
The grooming requirements for these dogs are relatively high, and you must ensure that you make enough time to look after these dogs. Their beards should cleaned and combed once a day for hygienic reasons. The hair around their bottoms should also be kept short. Lakeland Terriers should be brushed once every week, and it is advised that their coats are clipped every few months or so. These dogs are well suited for people suffering from allergies, as the Lakeland terrier are a very low shedder. For more detailed info, take a look at the Lakeland Terrier Grooming page.
Training
These dogs are full of beans, and will do very well when a variety of training methods are employed. Lakeland Terriers are quite difficult to housebreak. In order to be well mannered, these dogs have to get obedience training and it should be done in a very firm way in order to be successful.
