History

Many people believe that the Maremma have been two separate breeds before, namely the Abruzzese and the Maremmano. The Abruzzese used to be more of a mountain dog, and they had longer bodies. And the Maremmano had a bit of a shorter coat. During the 1950s these dogs were eventually recognized as a separate breed. These dogs are seen quite often in Great Britain, but the breed is very rare in other countries still.

Characteristics

The Maremma Sheepdog has a very friendly nature, and they are also very loyal dogs. They have sober habits, and they are also very determined dogs that are at the same time brave and very intelligent. This breed is distinguished and very even balanced, and they also do not bark excessively.

Temperament

Maremmas are very friendly dogs and of an even balance. This breed is very brave, and loyal toward their owners and families. These dogs are also wonderful watchdogs, and they do no bark a lot. The Maremma is a very affectionate dog, but they are not dependent on their families. It is good to know that these dogs are not the most obedient dogs, and will not follow all your commands.

Care

The Maremmas have a coat that suits all weather conditions, and it requires be brushing or combing on a regular basis in order to remove all the hair that is dead and loose. Extra care of the dogs should be taken when they are shedding. For more detailed info, take a look at the Maremma Sheepdog Grooming page.

Training

It should be known that these dogs are not the most obedient dogs, and they will not follow all your commands - even more so if they cannot see the point to a certain task. Training should be done with respect, and the training environment should also be consistent.
