As mentioned earlier the Norfolk and Norwich terriers were once classified as the same breed up until 1964 in England. In the U.S. this two breeds were recognized separately in 1979. The ancestry of these terriers is not entirely clear but they probably include Border, Cairn and Irish terrier. They were developed for the hunting vermin and later used by fox hunters to chase foxes from their dens when they went to ground.
Characteristics
Norfolk Terriers are very lively and nosy dogs. They are resilient and solid little dogs. They also do not show any fear, but at the same time they are also not aggressive. Norfolk Terriers present themselves with a lot of self-confidence. They bear themselves with importance and self-confidence. These little dogs are very sociable, trustworthy and constantly busy with something.
Temperament
The Norfolk is a very happy go lucky little dog, and do not show a lot of fear. These dogs are very energetic, and fond of playing. They love to socialise, and take long walks with their owners. Seeing that they get along well with children, they will make a wonderful family dog. Children should also be checked to make sure they are not too rough with these dogs, seeing that these dogs are one of the smallest Terrier groups. The Norfolk unlike most of the Terriers excels in obedience training, and they train very easy.
Care
Norfolk Terriers' grooming needs are not very high, and only moderate. Their coats require brushing on a weekly basis. The hair around their bottoms should also be kept short to promote good hygiene. Clipping their coats every few months will also make sure they are kept in a good condition. These dogs are very low shedders, permitting that they are groomed properly.
