History

The Norwich and Norfolk Terriers were once classified as the same breed of dogs until 1964 in England. During 1979, they have been recognized as two separate breeds by the United States of America. The exact origin of these dogs is not clear, but it is said that they have some similarities to the Border, the Cairn and the Irish terrier. These dogs were bred for hunting pests, and at a later stage they were used by hunters to chase foxes from their dens.

Characteristics

Norwich Terriers are very dependable dogs. They are quite lively and nosey, but also very brave. These dogs are very tough, and they have a very loving nature. They do not show a lot of fear, but at the same time they are also not aggressive loving heart. They are fearless and assertive, but are never aggressive or bad-tempered. Norwich Terriers thrives on the companionship of their families.

Temperament

The Norwich terrier is a very cheerful little dog. They are one of the smallest terriers that there is, but at the same time they have one of the biggest personalities. The Norwich is a very sociable and playful little dog. Norwich Terriers are very good with children in general, and they also do well as family dogs. Norwich Terriers are very trainable dogs, and they loved to be trained up in obedience. At times these dogs can be a bit cautious of strangers, and it is important to socialise them well with other animals when still in puppy hood.

Care

These dogs should be combed and brushed on a weekly basis. Special attention should be given to their beard and moustaches, as they get dirty very often. Norwich Terriers are not very heavy shedders and any excess hair can be plucked out during the year. Any excess hair between the paws should be removed. Training

Norwich Terriers are fairly quick to learn in training, but at times they do have a mind of their own. They also have a very obstinate streak about them, and this makes them difficult to housebreak. They will respond positively to training if it is conducted in a consistent and firm way. Norwich Terriers are also fond of learning tricks, and will do very well if they are given obedience training.
