History

Where the Old English sheepdog has its origin from is not entirely known, but some people think that some of their heritage comes from the Scottish Bearded Collie and a few other European herding dogs. The Old English sheepdog, or the Bobtail as they are being called, seems to have been developed around the start of the 19th century in England. Docking the tails of these dogs were started in order to get exemption from taxes for herding dogs. During the 1960s these dogs featured in several Disney movies, which made them very popular. Bobtail puppies are very irresistible, and this added to the popularity of this breed. Unfortunately, due to their popularity they have been over breaded which led to several genetic defects in the bloodlines.

Characteristics

These dogs are very well balanced, and they have a very even temper. Old English Sheepdogs have a very special charisma about them. They tend to do very well in a family environment, and will from time to time try to “herd” the family by pushing or bumping into them. This characteristic can be addressed by the right training however. The Old English sheepdog is a wonderful companion for children.

Temperament

The Bobtail is a very bright dog, and they are also very fond of playing. They are enthusiastic dogs that have a very good nature about them. The Sheepdog has a very good sense of humour, and love to just play around. Bobtails enjoy being the centre of the action, and they can also be very obstinate at times. The Bobtail is very fond of children, and in general makes a wonderful family dog if socialised properly from an early age onwards.

Care

Grooming requirements for this breed is anything from fairly moderate to high, and will therefore not be suited to people with little time available for grooming. They might have to take these dogs to professional groomers, and will be done at a cost then. The coats of these dogs have to be brushed several times during the week in order to keep it in a good condition. Each of these grooming seasons might take one to two hours. Clipping the coat might also be required during the year. The Old English sheepdog is only a moderate shedder, which means that he may not be ideal for people with allergies. Training

Training The Old English sheepdog does extremely well in herding activities, as they are very clever dogs. Firm trainers are needed for these dogs, seeing that they can be very hard header and strong willed. A combination of training methods is recommended for these dogs, as they tend to do things the way they want to. A different lot of training techniques will help to keep them alert.
