History

The Otterhound is originally from Great Britain. These dogs were at some stage used in groups to hung otter, and from there the name. It is believed that these dogs are linked to several other breeds, which includes the bloodhound.

Characteristics

Otterhounds are very jolly and happy go lucky dogs. People find them a real joy to be around. They are very friendly dogs, and also very clever. At times they do have a tendency to act very independently which makes training a bit of a challenge.

Temperament

The Otterhound is a dog is independent and hard headed. At the same time they are also very loving and affectionate dogs. They love exercise, and to play with their families – especially in areas where there is ample space. These dogs also require families that have enough time available to commit to their dogs. Otterhounds want to be involved with family activities, and they especially love swimming. The Otterhound is very strong-minded, and keen. These dogs will go a long way to follow a scent, and should be watched otherwise they can get lost.

Care

Although the hairy coats of the Otterhound may come across as very high maintenance, the grooming requirements for these dogs are not extremely high. Some time will be needed for grooming however. Their coats can be brushed twice a week, and might need clipping every few months or so to keep it in a good condition. The ears of these dogs should also be checked to make sure they are clean and dry, together with their beards. Otterhounds are medium shedding dogs, but this might increase during certain seasons. This makes them less ideal for people suffering from allergies. For more detailed info, take a look at the Otterhound Grooming page.

Training

Seeing that these dogs are very wilful and autonomous, different training methods should be followed. Consistent and patient training is the key to success with these dogs. They will not react positively if hard handed training methods is employed, but rather more gentle and patient techniques.
