History
Paterdale Terriers are almost not known outside the borders of Great Britain – these dogs are mostly found in the Lake District and also in the region of Yorkshire. Their name has been derived from the village in Cumbria where they were once found. These dogs were used for the hunting of rats, foxes and rabbits. Patterdale Terriers were mainly bred for their excellent working abilities, and not for their looks. The Patterdale Terrier is valued for its working ability more than its appearance.
Characteristics
The Patterdale Terrier is a very good hunting mate, and also gets along well with smaller type animals. These dogs can be very challenging, and will chase after almost any animals. These dogs love digging, and will go after all moving objects.
Temperament
Patterdale Terriers are very laid back terriers and they enjoy snuggling up to their owners and families. These dogs are fairly small, and could be classified as a toy dog – but their abilities qualify them as full blown terriers. These dogs love to play, and they are very tough when it comes to hunting. Patterdale terriers are very good watchdogs and they are very tough and relentless. These dogs also love to dig, and might not be ideal for people who love their gardens.
Care
Patterdale Terriers do not have a lot of grooming needs, as they have very short coats. They can be brushed with a firm hair brushed or rubber gloves to remove any excess hair. It is a good idea to check the feet of these dogs before letting them inside as they love to dig outside. For more detailed info, take a look at the Patterdale Terrier Grooming page.
Training
The Patterdale Terrier is a dog that is not very trainable, and it can be quite a difficult task. These dogs don’t have a very long attention span, and it will chase after anything that moves.
It is advised that these dogs have trainers that are firm, especially if training is to be successful.
