History
The Pharaoh hound has an extremely long history. These dogs have their origin from Egypt, and some of their ancestry can be traced back to very early times. These dogs were well-liked amongst Egyptian rulers. They also went on to become very popular in Malta. They were first introduced into the UK during the 1920s, and in the 1960s they finally made it into America.
Characteristics
Being very happy, calm and self-governing, these dogs are amazing with children, thus making them very good household pets. The Pharaoh hound can be a bit cautious of strangers, but will become a bit warmer if they get to know them. Pharaoh hounds are very prone to being shy, and it is important to socialise them with other animals early on.
Temperament
The Pharaoh hound is a very elegant, smart and stately dog. They are very supple, and possess lots of energy. These dogs like to bark, and even although this feature makes them a good watch dog, they may not be ideal for those who love peace and quiet. The Pharaoh hound needs lots of exercise, but should only be allowed to roam free in an enclosed area otherwise they will chase after things. Although Pharaoh Hounds like to engage in recreation, they are also very fond of spending time indoors. These dogs are not overly affectionate but enjoy companionship.
Care
The Pharaoh hound is ideal for those with little time to give to grooming. The Pharaoh hound has very low requirements when it comes to grooming. Their coats have to be brushed occasionally.
