History

The Polish Tatra Sheepdog is a working breed that has its origin during the 1600s in Poland – mainly as a herding and a guardian dog. Polish Tatra Sheepdogs nearly became extinct during the Second World War, but they were saved from extinction by the Polish Kennel Club. These dogs are extremely rare, and it is believed that there are only about 300 of them in America alone.

Characteristics

Polish Tatra Sheepdogs are very large and striking. These dogs have weather resistant coats, and this enables them to withstand cruel, freezing temperatures - as well as dry, hot climates. These dogs are very intelligent dogs, and they are also very independent. Polish Tatra Sheepdogs are enormously supple, attentive and lively. The Polish Tatra Sheepdog makes a confident and trustworthy companion dog.

Temperament

This resilient breed is brave, energetic and attentive. Polish Tatra Sheepdogs are lively and fast runners. These dogs are gentle and calm by nature, and they should never be treated in a harsh manner. This breed is also very loyal towards their owners, and they show lots of affection to their children – they also keep watch over their territory and the children in their families. The Polish Tatra Sheepdog is very autonomous and extremely clever – they are able to evaluate situations without any human direction.

Care

These dogs are relatively high shedding dogs, and they shed their undercoats twice during the year – they should be brushed and groomed quite often. These dogs will shed all year round if they are to be kept indoors. The Polish Tatra Sheepdog will not drool, seeing that they have fairly dry mouths. It is important to tend to their teeth, ears and nails on a weekly basis. For more detailed info, take a look at the Polish Tatra Sheepdog Grooming page.

Training

Polish Tatra Sheepdogs will require experienced owners that are also fairly intelligent. Owners of these dogs should be dominant, and also fair and consistent in their training of the dogs. These dogs should be socialised from an early age onwards in order to establish good behavior later on. Obedience training is also a must if these dogs are to be kept inside your home.
