History
Portuguese Water Dogs are believed to have their origin from the Algarve in Portugal. These dogs enjoy a very long history, and were used to help fishermen as a water retriever. Seeing that these dogs were bred to work in water, they love water and are excellent retrievers.
Characteristics
Portuguese Water Dogs are very bright – they are also very committed, trustworthy and reliable. Seeing that these dogs are also very alert, they make very good watch dogs. This breed of dogs is very focused on their families, and will not do well if kept in a kennel. The Portuguese water dog can be very over protective of their families, and should be socialized at an early age in order to get rid of any dominance issues that might reoccur at a later stage.
Temperament
These dogs are very submissive and supple. Portuguese water dog is also very bright, and they are very fond of working and playing. These water loving dogs are very brave, and have lots of endurance and eagerness for everything that they do. These dogs love to be part of the action, regardless of whether it is work or play. The Portuguese water dog requires a lot of exercise, and they demand a lot physically and mentally. Portuguese Water Dogs will bark id something is amiss, but they will not bark unnecessarily. These dogs can become somewhat destructive if they become bored.
Care
Regular combing and brushing of Portuguese Water Dogs are necessary to keep these dogs in a good condition. These dogs have a very bulky coat, and it can get tangled or matted quite easily. These dogs should be bathed only when necessary. It is advised that these dogs are brushed with a fine-toothed comb or a wire brush. Training
Portuguese Water Dogs are very friendly and secure dogs, they can however be wilful and stubborn. They are therefore best suited to owners with some previous experience in dog ownership. They also get along well with children, and also with most other pets if socialised from an early age onwards.
