History

Many believe that the ancestry of the Perro de Presa Canario includes the Bardino Majero that is now almost extinct. Some also believed that they have been crossed with English Mastiffs that have been imported. This breed was first developed in the Canary Islands during the 1800s, and they were specially developed for dog fighting purposes. During that time dog fighting was very popular, and it served as entertainment in many of the European countries.

Characteristics

The Perro de Presa Canario will require an experienced dog owner. These dogs are wonderful watchdogs, and they can be a bit wary when it comes to strangers. This breed also makes excellent guard dogs, and they are wonderful protectors of the family. The Perro de Presa Canario are very well balanced dog.

Temperament

The Canary Dog will need an experienced owner that can also dominate. These owners should be familiar with alpha nature of dogs. It is important that none of the family members are uncomfortable around these dogs. This is a breed that will make a wonderful guard dog. Not alone is it just their appearance that is intimidating, they can also confront an intruder. These dogs can be quite dangerous when in the wrong hands. But with the right family they can be wonderful companion dogs.

Care

The coats of these dogs are short, and fairly easy to groom. It can be brushed with a firm hair brush, and they can also be wiped down with a damp cloth to keep their coats shiny. Training

The training of these dogs should be done in a consistent manner. The trainer should also be experienced and dominant; otherwise these dogs will take control. It is advised that the owners are familiar with the alpha nature of dogs when training these dogs.
