History

The Puli is originally from Hungary. These dogs were used to work with their cousins, the Komondor to herd and round up sheep. The Komondor, which is the larger one of these two dogs, was used to guard the flocks. And the Puli were mainly used for driving and herding the flocks. The Puli was preferred by lots of the shepherds as they stood out easier, and the Komondor blended in better.

Characteristics

Pulis make very good watch dogs, seeing that they are very protective of their masters and territories. These dogs are very clever, and this aids in training them. Pulis perform very well when it comes to obedience, and they are also very good in the show arena. The fact that they move so well, gives them a great advantage when it comes to the guarding of sheep.

Temperament

Pulis are very intelligent dogs, and also very quick to learn - the Puli is a very energetic dog. These dogs possess lots of enthusiasm, they love to play and socialise. They have a lot of endurance and agility, but they can be obstinate at times which makes training a challenge from time to time. This breed is well-matched to someone who is confident and assertive and has some previous experience of dog ownership. Pulis are also very quick on their feet, and they also have a very curious nature - therefore it is advised that they should play in a safe area. These hairy and adorable dogs have a very sweet nature, and enjoy spending time with their families.

Care

Pulis are very low shedding dogs, so they will work well with people that like a clean house and are prone to suffering from allergies. Grooming does take same time with these dogs, as their coats are very high maintenance. The cords of the Pulis coats should be separated by hand ever so often. They should also be bathed regularly, and drying these dogs may take up to a day. The cords should also be clipped; otherwise they will soon reach the floor. For more detailed info, take a look at the Puli Grooming page.

Training

Seeing that the Puli are an intelligent dog, and they are relatively easy to train. Training that is firm and consistent will help these dogs to do well in training. It is recommended that these dogs get obedience classes from an early age onwards.
