House Breaking food Programme

While housebreaking your puppy, they need to be on a strict food and water programme. This makes it easier for you, the owner, as you'll start to get a rough idea of when they'll need the toilet.

Only leave food and water on the floor for 20 minutes, the puppy will soon start to learn to eat when the foods there. If you have a small puppy (under five pounds) you'll have to leave food out all the time for them. Ask your vet if you're not sure.

If your puppy is going to the toilet more than four times a day and/or the stools are soft, it could be due to worms so take a sample to the vets to get it checked. If the test is negative cut back on food by 10% as some puppy's can be greedy and eat more than they can digest.

Dry food is cheaper, easy and good for your puppy's teeth.

If your puppy doesn't eat the food, don't add any treats what so ever to make them eat. Don't worry if they miss an occasional meal, but make sure your puppy still has energy and is drinking normally.

Try and stay to the same food as changing food can upset your puppy's stomach and set off diarrhea. If you have to change food, do it gradually adding the new food into the normal food.

Water needs to be obtainable about three to five times in a day. This should be measured by how much the puppy weighs. One cup to every 8 pounds in body weight, but offer a twenty-four pound puppy one cup just three times a day (if they finish the water and looks for more try 1 and a half cups).

Give one or two ice cubes to your puppy if it's not time for water. This will quench his/her thirst and not strain his/her system. One cup of water to a 10 pound puppy is about 15 cups to a 150 pound man so if your puppy drinks a lot they'll urinate a couple of hours after drinking. So make sure it's easy to get outside or put down paper.

While housebreaking make sure all the toilet seats are down and cat food and water bowls are kept away to stop them drinking. You will need to talk to your vet if your puppy is urinating more than ten times a day and drinks excessively, also if they urinate little amounts but all over the place.

In hot weather you need to leave down more water and make sure not to over exercise them.
