History
It is said that the Rat terrier was given its name by Teddy Roosevelt. These dogs were first developed in Great Britain, and have their origin from the Smooth Fox Terriers as well as the Manchester Terriers. They were first brought to the USA during the 1890s when they still had a color of black and tan. Rat Terriers were one of the best in the rat pits. There is a story that one Rat terrier have killed over 2 501 rats in a length of only seven hours in a barn that was infested by rats.
Characteristics
Rat terriers can be very obstinate and wilful at the best of times. They may also be a bit reserved when around strangers, but can warm up with time. Although they are small, they show now fear which makes them a true terrier. This breed is wonderful companion dogs for persons that are alone at home. Rat Terriers are not recommended for families that are not very active, as they can become destructive if not stimulated enough physically and mentally.
Temperament
Rat Terriers are very clever dogs that are also very watchful and affectionate. These dogs are very curious and vibrant. Rat Terriers are very loving, and will make superb companion dogs for those who are very active. They get along well with children, especially when raised with them from a young age onwards. Rat Terriers are very defensive, and they are also very good watch dogs. These dogs are nippy and very fond of playing – they will also not bark excessively. Rat Terriers are keen on pleasing their owners, and they are also very highly trainable. In general, Rat Terriers are well mannered.
Care
The Rat Terrier is a fairly low maintenance dog, and will not require a lot of grooming. Brushing and combing them occasionally is sufficient to keep their coats in a good condition – this will also get rid of all the excess hair. Training
Seeing that Rat Terriers are so lively, they can also be very obstinate and prove difficult to train. This breed will need an owner that is experienced and firm in fair in their training of the dog. It is also important that these dogs are trained in a consistent manner, as these dogs will get bored very quickly.
