Resolving Common Puppy Housebreaking Problems.

How to get your puppy through some common housebreaking problems.

Puppy fouls the crate.

This could be due to the puppy being in the crate too long. Yet it could be due to the crate being too big or if there is bedding in it. Try to change these factors and if your puppy is still fouling the crate try confining him to a room with newspaper on the floor (to use as a toilet) and leaving the crate door open for two weeks. After two weeks, try using the crate again.

Puppy eats their feces.

If your puppy eats his own feces try adding For-Bid or Adolph's Meat Tenderizer on their food, this is available from your vet. If this doesn't work within a few days spray the stools with Bitter Apple. Don't let your puppy see you do this. This problem can be chronic and can only be stopped if you pick up the feces rapidly.

Puppy has an accident out of sight.

Keep your puppy near you, on a lead or in the crate for a few months. While doing this, praise them for going outside, keep to the schedule and don't change their diet. Your puppy will need more exercise during this time.

Puppy uses a certain indoor spot.

Your puppy will more-than-likely choose and a place out of the way to mess. When they do this use an odour neutralizer and then start to spend a lot of time in that place with your puppy. This is not a punishment but if the puppy realises this area is being used, they'll not mess where they spend time.

Puppy will not go outside.

This usually happens if you live in the city. To get things moving, take him for a long, vigorous walk in the morning. If this doesn't work, give them a bowl of warm water mixed with a small amount of wet food in the morning. After they drink a big amount, go for a stroll and he will go to the toilet. Make sure to praise the puppy and give them a special treat when he has gone. Teaching them the "hurry up" command will help get what you want too.

Puppy won't go out in the rain.

You need to get your puppy used to the rain, so when the rain is warm go for a walk with your puppy. The more delicate breed should wear rain gear and make sure your firm. If you can put up with it so can your puppy.

Puppy goes while on the way out.

Try to carry your puppy outside when this happens. If he is too big, loop a leash or rope under his stomach and it will stop them from squatting. If you shout at your puppy it will make it ten times worse.

Puppy goes when they greet me or guests.

The name of this problem is submissive urination. Don't punish the puppy or any type of punishment will make matters worse and can cause long term problem. Try ignoring your puppy for the first ten minutes you are home.
