History

Ridgebacks have their origin in South Africa. It is believed that number of breeds might have been involved in the development of the Ridgeback, including the Mastiff, the Great Dane and the Bloodhound. Ridgebacks developed into very clever dogs, and they are also dogs with lots of strength. These dogs can go with water for extended periods of time, and can also cope with extreme temperatures. Ridgebacks were originally used in packs to hunt antelope, buffalo, leopards and lions. During the 1870s, this breed was taken to Zimbabwe where they enjoyed great success as a hunting dog.

Characteristics

Rhodesian Ridgebacks get along well with other animals if they are properly socialised with other dogs from an early age onwards – they are however not recommended for homes that have small children. These dogs learn very quickly, and are very protective of their owners and territory. They can become quite destructive if they are left alone for extended periods of time though.

Temperament

Rhodesian Ridgebacks have plenty of energy, and requires owners than can give them enough exercise. These dogs are quite friendly, but aggression can be a dilemma in some lines. Therefore they should be socialised from puppy hood onwards. Rhodesian Ridgebacks are very independent and secure dogs, and is well matched to owners that are confident. Being intelligent, these dogs are quick learners – but training might be a challenge. These dogs do have a tendency to be dominant, demanding and controlling.

Care

Grooming requirements for these dogs aren’t very high, and their coats have to be brushed occasionally in order to keep it in a good condition. They can be wiped down with a damp cloth from time to time in order to maintain a good condition. These dogs aren’t heavy shedding dogs, and will be well suited to allergy sufferers. Training

Training must be started at an early age with these dogs to avoid difficulties later on. Rhodesian Ridgebacks requires firm handlers, but training should also be gentle and consistent. These dogs are very good as watch dogs, and also for hunting purposes.
