History

The Rottweiler has it origin from Germany where they were used to control livestock. These dogs have also been used very effectively as guard dogs and police dogs. The Rottweiler today is used several different things, including tracking, herding, police work and obedience trails.

Characteristics

Rottweiler can be very fun loving, but also be very commanding and solemn at times. Early obedience training and socialization is very important for these dogs, as they can be very protective and territorial. These dogs are very terrifying, and until today still retain an undeserving status as a cruel dog – even although they can do quite well in a family environment.

Temperament

Well-bred Rottweilers are calm, clever, solemn, confident and brave – they do however have territorial instincts and can be aggressive when it comes to defending their families. Rottweilers are very strong dogs, and it is also very important to properly socialise these dogs from puppy hood onwards. Rottweilers are very trainable dogs, and remember very well what they learn. These dogs love to be stimulated and exercised regularly, and do very well with obedience. These dogs also do best outside; more then they are left inside. Well trained Rottweilers will make wonderful family pets.

Care

Rottweilers are medium shedding dogs, and their coats are easy to maintain seeing that a brushing 2-3 times a week will keep their coats in a good condition. These dogs will only require a bath once or twice a year, and then it is also very important to rinse these dogs thoroughly. For more detailed info, take a look at the Rottweiler Grooming page.

Training

Rottweilers are very keen to learn, and will do very well in training if provided with the right opportunities. Obedience training is very important for these dogs, seeing that they can be very destructive without the right training and stimulation. A Firm manner is very important with these dogs. The Rottweiler is a very intelligent breed, and also does well in many different sports and trials - they can however be very stubborn.
