History
Salukis are an ancient breed of dogs, and they have their origin in the Middle East. The names of these dogs were derived from Arabian city, Saluk. The Saluki dog is also known as the Gazelle Hound, the Arabian Hound or the Persian Greyhound. The Salukis were developed by desert tribes that moved around, and were spread from the Caspian Sea to the Sahara desert. The different breeds were many times developed in separation – explaining the broad diversity of coat colours, and also the tow different coat types.
Characteristics
The Saluki is a very gentle and loving dog. In general they are calm and sociable companions, and very much devoted to their families. They are very elegant in their movement, and extremely fast dogs. These dogs are very inquisitive, and also have a good sense of humour. The Salukis also have a very strong hunting instinct.
Temperament
These dogs are very quick, and also very supple. Salukis are very refined dogs, but can also be a bit shy at times. They are quite independent, and have a tendency to manipulate those around them – requiring an assertive owner. Salukis should preferably not be left alone in unsecured areas as they can soon be off and away. It is important to socialise these dogs early on in order to promote their self-assurance. Salukis are very energetic, but can be quite calm when kept indoors. The Saluki can be relatively reserved, and will not always follow you everywhere. But they can still display affection toward their families.
Care
Salukis are very low maintenance dogs, so grooming these dogs is not a very big task. Their coats can be kept in a good condition by simply brushing them often. These dogs are medium shedding dogs, and will work with someone suffering from allergies. For more detailed info, take a look at the Saluki Grooming page.
Training
Saluki will do very well if they are trained in obedience and socialised early on. Their natural instinct to hunt is not something that will be easily discouraged. Salukis are quick learners, but training should not be recurring – these dogs prefer shorter and mixed sessions. The Saluki will not respond very positively to rough training methods, but will rather like kind and consistent training sessions.
