History

The Schipperke was first developed in Flanders. Since then they have been in existence for many centuries in Belgium. It is believed that this Flemish dog was almost certainly developed from a now died out Belgian sheepdog. They may even include some Northern Spitz breed. The Schipperke was used as a dog on farms, and also as watch dogs and dogs that are were used to catch rats. The Schipperke became very popular in Belgium, especially after one of these dogs was acquired by the Belgian Queen in 1885.

Characteristics

These are dogs of average intelligence, and it adds to the difficulty involved in housebreaking these dogs. But with consistent training, these dogs will eventually do well. The Schipperke is a very alert and self-assured dog, and likes to form a strong bond with their family. These dogs are used as watch dogs from time to time, but they were originally developed to hunt pests, therefore they may have strong hunting instincts present.

Temperament

The Schipperke is a very trustworthy and affectionate dog. Although they are relatively small, they possess lots of character and personality. These dogs are very fond of playing, and they are also very playful and curious. The Schipperke also has a lot of courage, and this makes them think that they are actually much bigger than they really are. These dogs are well mated to those with some previous dog ownership experience, seeing that they can be quite obstinate and even controlling at times. They require self-confident and confident owners. The Schipperke is an alert dog, and will bark to raise alarm is something is amiss.

Care

The Schipperke is a good choice of dog if you don’t have lot of time available for grooming. You should brush the coat of these dogs once a week in order to keep it in a good condition. During periods of heavier shedding, it will need to be increased. The Schipperke is a medium shedding dog, and will shed more heavily on a seasonal basis, therefore not ideal for allergy sufferers. Training

The Schipperke requires training that is firm, but at the same time also gentle. These dogs are very watchful and energetic. They tend to lose interest fairly quickly, and therefore prove difficult to housetrain. If they are given the correct training, and also obedience training, the Schipperke can be a very well mannered and polite dog.
