History

Fox Terriers were developed originally for fox hunting, during the 19th century in England. These Fox Terriers were used to pursue the fox from its den after the fox hounds had cornered them. Fox terriers are thought to be one of the oldest terriers. Fox Terriers are not as popular as the other terrier breeds, but they are very well known and recognized. Fox Terriers are primarily family companions and show dogs today.

Characteristics

Smooth Fox Terrier is very well-balanced, lively and very happy go lucky. These dogs are very clever, keen and sturdy built - they are also very courageous. Smooth Fox Terriers are very brave and will not be intimidated easily.

Temperament

Smooth Fox Terriers are full of energy, and they also possess lots of character. These dogs are alert and curious, and will require lots of exercise. They are very fond of playing, and like physical interaction. Smooth Fox Terriers are very supple and quick, and love to chase - therefore they will require a safe and secure environment. Smooth Fox Terriers can be very obstinate and independent, and will be well suited to those owners that have some previous dog ownership experience. Smooth Fox Terriers can be very controlling of their belongings, and also have a domineering streak. This breed loves to dig and bark.

Care

Smooth Fox Terriers are low maintenance dogs, and suited well to those with little time available for grooming. Occasional brushing of their coats will help to keep them sleek, and in a good condition. These dogs are medium shedding dogs, and are not well suited for allergy sufferers. Training

These dogs require extensive socialization and obedience training, as they are quite stubborn and wilful. This breed will challenge authority, and are also dominant. They also tend to bark a lot, and will not respond well to rough training methods. Experienced trainers and owners are recommended for these dogs. Training will be successful if it is done in a firm and consistent manner. Smooth Fox Terriers are very talented when it comes to agility, fly ball and tracking.
