History
Spinone Italianos are one of the oldest members of the Griffon family. They are also often referred to as the "Italian Griffon". This breed almost certainly has its origin in the northern part of Italy. These dogs did extremely well as hunting dogs. The Spinone Italianos' coat protected them from the cold water and sub-zero temperatures. This helped to make these dogs ideal for hunting on different terrains, and in many types of weather.
Characteristics
This breed of dogs is very big and strong, and they also have a very distinctive look about them. These dogs portray lots of endurance and survival skills when they are hunting - at the same time being very well-organized and capable. These dogs are not very flashy, and they make wonderful companion dogs seeing that they are so affectionate and gentle.
Temperament
The Spinone Italiano is very kind, and always eager to please his family and owners. Spinone Italianos make very good family pets, particularly to owners who have sufficient time to dedicate to their dogs. They also do well with inexperienced dog owners - the fact that they are very clever dogs makes their training fairly easy. The Spinone Italiano is a quick learner, and they are also very sensitive dogs. These dogs are also very warm and friendly, and they possess a strong character. They are very fond of playing, but they can be fairly laid back at times and come across very solemn. The Spinone Italiano will require a lot of attention and space, being rather large dogs.
Care
The grooming requirements for these dogs are not extremely high, but they do require some work in order to be kept in a good condition. Their coats should be brushed on a weekly basis, and it is also advised that it should be clipped every few months or so. If these dogs will perform in the show arena, their coats must be stripped every few months. These dogs may be well matched to allergy sufferers, seeing that they are low shedders. Training
Spinone Italianos quick to learning new things to do, but they can also be very stubborn at times. They have a wilful streak, and act independently when it comes to make decisions. Spinone Italianos should have proper socialization training when they are still puppies, as this should help them to be shy at a later stage. This breed of dogs can be quite sensitive and gentle training methods should therefore then be used - enthusiasm and patience should therefore form a part of their training.
