History
Standard Schnauzers are the older of the other two Schnauzer breeds – the Mini Schnauzer and the Giant Schnauzer. Schnauzers were at first developed to work in the cattle and sheep farming areas, in the Southern part of Germany. Standard Schnauzers were used by the farmers to guard the farms, to catch pests and to herd the animals on the farm. The origin of the Schnauzer goes back as far as the 15th century. .
Characteristics
The Standard Schnauzer is a dog of medium-size. These dogs are very intelligent, charming and strong. Standard Schnauzers has lots of elegance and style about them. The Standard Schnauzer has a royal and refined look, and these dogs are also very flexible – being it as a family companion or a hard worker.
Temperament
The Standard Schnauzer is without fear, very trustworthy, full of energy, affectionate and also very stubborn at times. The Schnauzer will make a wonderful pet for the family, and will get along well with children if they grow up with them. Standard Schnauzers are one of the most intelligent dog breeds there is. The fact that they are very energetic and wilful makes that they should be socialised from puppy hood onwards. The Standard Schnauzer is highly trainable, and will do well if the training methods that are used are testing and positive, and also rewarding at the end. Standard Schnauzers will do very well at obedience, herding and also tracking competitions. Standard Schnauzers want to be a part of the family, and these dogs are very devoted to their owners.
Care
The Standard Schnauzer is a dog that requires a lot of maintenance, and will not be well suited to someone that has little time to devote to grooming their dog. The coat of these dogs should be brushed twice a week, and their beards daily in order to keep up good hygiene. The coats of these dogs might also need clipping from time to time. If these dogs are show dogs, their coats should be stripped every few months or so to keep it in good condition. Training
Seeing that the Standard Schnauzer can be very difficult and wilful at times, they will require an owner that is confident and firm. This breed will need intensive socialization and obedience training from an early age onwards. Standard Schnauzers will do best of their training is conducted in a firm and consistent manner. They tend to do very well in areas such as search and rescue, competitive obedience and also military work. In the past they have also been successfully employed as therapy dogs.
