History
The origin of the Tibetan Spaniels can be traced back to the Himalayan Mountains in Tibet over 2000 years ago. The dogs were developed by the Buddhist monks, but they were never sold to anyone. The Tibetan Spaniels only served as gifts to respected and honoured friends, or houses of royalty. Tibetan Spaniels are considered to be one of the oldest dog breeds. These dogs were used as watchdogs, and also to keep their owners warm when it was extremely cold.
Characteristics
The Tibetan spaniel is a fairly rare dog, and also very old. The Tibetan spaniel is energetic, small – but also very alert. These dogs are very suitably and warmly called the "little lions" due to them being so tender, but at the same time also tough. This breed portrays a certain attraction which makes them wonderful companions.
Temperament
Tibetan Spaniels are very energetic, happy go lucky and very clever dogs. These dogs are very kind and also fond of playing. They also tend to do well around considerate children. The Tibetan spaniel is very committed to their families, and if they are properly socialised at a young age they will get along with other pets later on. These dogs are a bit cautious of strangers, and may bark if they see someone approaching. Tibetan Spaniels are quite independent and hard to train, but with the right training they will do really well. Tibetan Spaniels will be fine for inexperienced owners, and they also make very good watchdogs.
Care
The hair of these dogs is quite long, but they will only require a good brushing once a week. During the times of the year when they shed more, this might have to be increased. Tibetan Spaniels are a moderate shedding breed. For more detailed info, take a look at the Tibetan Spaniel Grooming page.
Training
Tibetan Spaniels are very autonomous and clever, but they do have a stubborn streak. They do tend to think they are more knowledgeable then their owners. In general, Tibetan Spaniels do not do well in obedience or any other training activities, and are very easily bored with repetitive tasks. This breed is however keen to please their owners, and will do anything to get some attention. They may prove to be difficult when it comes to housebreaking, and therefore crate training is recommended for these dogs. Early socialisation is very important for the Tibetan spaniel.
